ENLISTING THE EQUITY MARKET TO MEET THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM

To meet the demand for nature positive investment, IEG has developed a new type of company, a Natural Asset Company (NAC). A NAC’s equity represents a new class of security designed to incorporate the value of nature and the vital ecosystem services nature produces into the enterprise value of the company.

NACs are a voluntary, market-based solution that can be used to protect and grow the natural assets under management, nurture healthy ecosystems, build wealth, and foster livelihoods that work with nature rather than simply extracting from it.

IEG has over a dozen projects in development, including:

An indigenous-led NAC in North America to finance the conservation of more than one million acres of land
An agricultural NAC led by a major food company to finance the conversion of their grain supply chain to regenerative practices
A marine and terrestrial NAC for a government in the Latin American and Caribbean region seeking to meet their 30x30 conservation goals

WHY DO WE NEED NACs?

People often say nature is priceless, intending to indicate how valuable it is. But in today’s economic system the value of nature is simply not counted. This has resulted in things like pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Efforts to address this market failure have made strides through philanthropy and policy measures in the form of taxes and regulation, but these have been insufficient to address the challenges at the scale needed.

How big is the shortfall? The financing gap for biodiversity is estimated between US$598-824 billion per year, for climate change about US$5 trillion dollars per year, and for the transition to a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable economy, orders of magnitude larger.

We believe that natural capital and financial capital need to be brought to a level playing field to address the major environmental, economic, and social problems we face today. This is why IEG developed NACs, which value the goods and services that nature produces — like clean air, water, and productive soils — and provide a way to invest directly in the health of nature rather than just reducing the harm done.
